“Flash Light” is a song by funk band Parliament, released in January 1978 on the album Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome. It was the first #1 R&B hit by any of the P-Funk groups and reached #16 on the Pop charts. The track became Parliament’s second certified million selling single, following “Give Up the Funk”. “Flash Light” also gave Casablanca Records its first number one R&B hit.

Hmm… Let me see if I got this right. The is the (occasional) love interest of the protagonist of How I Met Your Mother, in a flashback to her younger years as a one-hit Canadian pop star and kid’s show host (who solves mathematical mysteries in her curling stone-shaped spaceship). When she isn’t fleshing out her back story, she’s a journo/news anchor in NYC, and the actress portraying her really is Canadian.

I’m ashamed to say it, I had to look all that up.

Those “sing-along” versions are weird. They’re not the original footage from the movie, and the rendering quality isn’t as good [don’t ask how many hours I’ve spent in a Disney store with the babbies whilst waiting for Mommy TOO MANY].

Aaaaand, since the song appears in the film in its entireity – why not use the original footage?

It’s Disney – cross-unit licensing issue?
