They have trouble keeping good people there. It’s an overwhelming and tightly controlled company town environment and living nearby means dealing with near-DC pressures. Many excellent researchers would rather live in a “regular” city and interact with people with a wider variety of interests every day. Still, government science funding cuts are going to send more and more American research to private places like Janelia, which is funded by HHMI. Let’s hope they remain as willing to share their findings.
