I don’t understand why this isn’t the major thrust of university CS departments. Most other sciences (since the trade of programming computers likes to style itself as a science) are focused on expanding the domain of public knowledge and public utilities, why shouldn’t CS do likewise, with assignments and “research” projects invested in building out public domain software?
