Pinkwater writes for several age levels.

I seem to recall that Fat Men from Space was intended for younger readers than (say) Lizard Music, and the Roger Nifkin and the Snarkout Boys books were more for the YA crowd.

A bright nine year old could read them all, including Pinkwater’s essay collections.

Things like “The Muffin Fiend” and “Wempires” are for even younger readers. No upper-bound, though. “Muffin Fiend” rocks!
