New York Comic-Con at a glance

The last few years seems to have been ones of phenomenal growth for cons. The Calgary Expo, which I go to, started less than 10 years ago, and this spring 97,000 people attended. Geek culture is quite mainstream now, despite the disturbing in-group/out-group dynamics remaining and creating shitstorms.

I understand the appeal of small cons, but I can’t conceive of a reason to go to a huge one. What does a soda cost at this thing?

Part of me wants to go to a con just for the experience. But then the rest of me says “Why, you got better things to do with your money” so I don’t go and do the other things instead.

Just be glad it’s not a scratch-n-sniff.
