The reason why people are comfortable with Gmail [and its text-scanning advertising system] is because it's not being read by people.
i don't think this is the issue, sure it's part of it, but i think its more to do with the scale of consequences. if GMAIL algorithm messes up, worst thing that can happen is i get ads that arent well targeted to me. if the NSA was using a similar algorithm and IT messed up the worst thing that could happen is i get labeled a terrorist and thrown in gitmo. these two things arent even on the same LEVEL.
if GMAIL was reading my email and then banning me from all google services based on a TOS violation it picked up in my email, that is getting a little closer to this level, but still far behind.
