Why it's hard to find a plane in the ocean

This demonstration is really really really bad. Th average lay person going to walk away from it thinking it only take a few clicks to find the plane. The plane should have been hidden randomly in the image, that would give a true grasp of the issue.

You really want to punish the readers, don’t you? Why not have it in four or five languages, while you’re at it? Oh, and get the garden hose, I think a typhoon is coming!

The starting slide seemed confusing. It says:

“The original search area… encompassed around 120,000 square nautical miles. In this grid, each square represents one square nautical mile being searched.”

But that original grid is only 36x48, so 1,728 square miles…

As you zoom in, a map scale would have helped…
