$50m centrist news site shuts after one year of wealthy owners insisting that's what everyone wants

Even the most neutral and centrist of news will by definition be biased in support of the status quo.

Yes, and the choice of what to report on creates its own bias, too, aside from whether that reporting is “neutral” or not. What is on the front page or top of the feed? What gets relegated to the boondocks? What has been ignored altogether?

I’m guessing the fact that I’ve never heard of it is a symptom of the problem.

Also, “The Messenger” sounds like a Christian rag, so … branding?

I’m guessing that it was intended to evoke “Hey! I’m just the messenger!”

They called themselves “Zentrum” but they always actually were quite conservative. Definitely right of wherever one might draw the line in the middle at the time. Think “catholic Tories” and you have a working approximation. And that ain’t centrist in my book.
What/who of them had survived the Nazis and the war re-formed in 1945 as ecumenical (and economic) conservative parties CDU and CSU; the C being shorthand for Christian, not catholic. (Don’t get me started on the S in CSU, that’s a rant for another day.)

Some clowns are currently trying to revive the “Zentrum” Brand. They’re ex-AfD which tells you all you need to know.
