it’s not the disease that’s evolving to become less fatal but the collective immune systems of the population affected by it that is reacting and adapting to the disease

IIRC after the 1918 pandemic, this is how we’ve wound up with seasonal flu. But I think I read this in the newspaper so take that FWIW.
