A tempting offer

What about, ‘buy two drinks and get a third… for the price of three!’.

Seriously though - if I had a restaurant outside a casino, my blackboard would say, ‘When the steaks are high and the chips are down - steak and chips!’

I looked past the Fireball ad and focused on the part scrawled in chalk. I’ve accepted advertising as a necessary evil, although in the case of Fireball the product itself is evil. I like some of the advertising, such as the replicas of fire trucks they’ve had parked in front of local liquor stores. I see them and think, Egad, that sounds awful, but I’d love to take that truck for a spin.

I’m all for bad puns and cleverness, but the good jokes always get copied to the point of staleness, don’t they? I’m sure the very first “soup of the day: whisky” and “no wifi, talk amongst yourselves” signs were minor masterpieces of cheek and wit, but in this age of Facebook and Instagram there must be thousands of each at any given time. Not so fresh.

Yes! This! That’s my take on it too! Especially that “unattended children will be given an espresso and a puppy” I swear, EVERY coffeeshop around here has that one.

I really gotta start taking pics of the chalkboard at this coffee shop in Harvard Square I pass every Saturday. Last week: “All beards now health board compliant”, this week : “Your new favorite place to sit and stare at your phone for a few hours.”

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the concept. Gimme a minute…

This sign is personally disturbing to me. Because it encourages the alcoholic’s attitude, imho.

But I can’t say it’s inappropriate advertising. I even laughed out loud when I saw it and a coworker asked what’s up about it.

It’s an expression of speech that doesn’t directly harm, so I must stand behind the right for it to be said.

Senile works too. Fizban’s favorite spell, and all that.
