Last fall DH and I visited the Udvar-Hazy Smithsonian annex, which is the storage expansion for the Air and Space Museum, out by Dulles Airport. If you can only visit one or the other, go for the annex, which has hundreds of flying machines on display and much less crass commercialism.
This is relevant because one of the areas you can view is the restoration hangar. The day we were there, they had in the works an old Wright era glider, a WWII bomber, and tucked away in a corner, an X-wing. cognitive whiplash
