Amazon bars Australians from shopping on its non-Aussie sites to put pressure on the government to rescind tax rule

This whole thing has been caused by Liberal politicians being in the pocket of certain commercial interests, Gerry Harvey being one. His numerous attempts to set up internet based stores have all failed spectacularly, so this is a form of revenge on customers for not paying his high prices at his physical stores that are, frankly, antagonistic to consumers. The number of times he has been warned and fined by the ACCC is breathtaking.

Says the person who just replied to a dissenting comment with “facepalm”.

Their mistake was obvious if they had read the preceding messages. Also, facepalm doesn’t attack the person, but the utterance, so good try there, friend. But “swing and a miss”.

How about this:

The article this comment thread is related to is about Amazon (non-Australia) doing just that. They didn’t want to collect VAT (GST) for Australia, so they left the market. And still people are upset with them.

How’s that, @SteveT? Is it clear enough for you now?

Certainly a bit clearer. What’s more, you’ve won me over with your charm.

Not quite. They didn’t leave the Australian market, they just blocked Australians from some–but not all–of their retail sites.

And my comment wasn’t in direct response to the article. It was in response to a couple of the early comments that suggest it’s unfair to make retailers collect the taxes.
