I’m old enough to kind of remember that. It was the 70s, though, and it was already dying out. I remember reading an article in the very early 80s about how in the future clothing would be made of much cheaper materials, and therefore be more inexpensive but not last as long. The article helpfully suggested using the worn-out clothes as cleaning rags.
You still see a few ads around bragging about how such-and-such is durable and will last a long time, but those are few and far between.
