Not to put too fine a point on it, but the article oddly leaves out that this was one of the scenarios for NATO to deal with a SovBloc attack in Europe during the Cold War. 5,000 tanks storm westward across the North German Lowlands and are stopped by a couple of tactical nuclear artillery shells.
I spend the better part of 1986 training for this.
