An exercise in absurdity.
âIt certainly doesnât have to be a crime if you have somebody who completely corrupts the office of president and who abuses trust and who poses great danger to our liberty. You donât need a technical crime.â -Alan Dershowitz, 1998
Hereâs the thing. I think every single President of the United States in the past 40 years except Jimmy Carter should have been impeached. Oddly enough, as skeevy as he is, Clinton might have been the least deserving. Hereâs my thought process:
Nixon: Watergate. 'nuff said.
Ford: for pardoning Nixon. Abuse of power. Nixon should have done time.
Carter: Probably more deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize than impeachment
Regan: Iran-Contra. Directly violated federal law prohibiting the sales of arms to Contra rebels. We now know he was also in negotiations with the Iranians holding Americans hostage during the 1980 presidential election, undermining official negotiations.
George HW Bush: See above.
Clinton: Though he was impeached for âlyingâ under oath, that only came about because of a partisan BS excuse for an investigation. His abuse of power was the affair with Lewinsky, taking advantage of someone many, many layers of power below him. That could easily have been handled with censure and a civil lawsuit, rather than the impeachment process.
Shrub: Conspiracy to lie to Congress for the nonexistent WMD excuse to go to war against Iraq.
Obama: Huh? What did Obama do to justify impeachment? The extrajudicial assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki and his son, Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, both US Citizens. The Obama administration blatantly violated the US Constitution to execute US Citizens, one of whom was a minor, without due process.
Trump: The mess weâre currently in.
The Trump administration exists in a state of quantum superposition in which the things heâs said to have done of simultaneously did and did not happen. Classic case of the âShrödingerâs Pussy-Grabberâ paradox.

(No, I donât agree with Chomsky on every point, but itâs food for thought)
Thanks for the link.
His argument for Carter is pretty weak. Aid as a war crime? When itâs been shown that withdrawing aid only exacerbates inequality and increases violence? Nah.
Other than that, heâs right on. No surprise.
Yeah, usually I go by the standard âwould we accuse an adversary of committing war crimes if they did X?â as a guideline of whether X counts as a war crime. I canât recall any times the United States demanded any other regimes face justice at the Hague for providing aid, even aid to someone we didnât like.
If you want to be cynical, thereâs always Brzezinski boasting about instigating the Soviet Afghan War.
Meh. Iâd file that under âtrying to push people in the direction they are already sprinting.â
Impeachmilk!
We know that Graham will pull a maneuver when pressed on facts and testimony, âI canât speak to that, as I wasnât there for it.â
