Mr. Mock was a friend of one of my co-workers who has a side gig as a wildlife photographer, and by all accounts he was an accomplished guide who knew what he was doing.
This seems to simply be a bad case of “coming across another super predator when it was having a bad day” (and also why a lot of Alaskan fishing guides carry ridiculously large bore revolvers).
