I’ve never noticed it in my eyes, but maybe twice a decade, the pollen will get bad enough that it gives me a sinus infection. last time, I tried to abate any further inflammation by riding my morning work commute with a bandanna, bandit/crip style.
I knew how it looked, but I could give less than a fuck since my head felt like it got run-over by a truck.
“Gravel Bikes”. They’re a thing. Obvious, and called for by millions of cyclists over the years.
I want to replace my faithful Rockhopper, which has gear that is basically ruined and will cost $$$ to replace, with something for commuting and also kids-outing fun. Also lets me load it with stuff to carry.
Thinking Specialized Sequoia Elite, or Genesis Croix de Fer 20.
Yes, I see the “Adventure Bike” category is achingly trendy; but frankly it fits my bill. The roads in London are awful - I commuted in on my race bike today and god it felt fragile. My Rockhopper (bless it) is going in for a service and determination on the cost of fixing it up. If it goes over £200, I’m moving on.
But whaddya think? I’m not willing to pay for a super carbon gravel track leftie fork do-wha-diddy! Steel is the way on this kind of bike, at a push, alu.
I don’t know much about the Genesis, but: the level of detail and thought that went into that Specialized is pretty impressive for a production bike. As I recall, all the spokes on the entire bike are the same length- so you only have to carry one spare size. For example.
Comes down to hub flange size and spacing. Super unusual to find in production bikes. Mildly difficult to actually do- especially in a bike with disc brakes…
Visited my local bike store today. A bunch of the kids have the Sequoia. Bummer. Now I really want one. How can I stand by, ageing and vulnerable, while they live my dreams out? NO! I say.
Have you looked at the alloy models from Planet X or Merlin Cycles? No personal experience (wrong continent, alas) but those folks always seem to offer a heck of lot for the money. The UK is no bad place to be for new bike shopping.
So the Ikea bike is at my local store, and it’s practically half what some of the early price estimates were. If I move anywhere closer to urban, I’m totally getting one. ($399 for “family”, though that’s w/o the attachments I desire)
I think those bikes are pretty cool, on paper at least. I haven’t heard about how they’re holding up with actual use yet, but I’m optimistic about them. Nice to see the prices are going down, because that was one reservation I did have about them.
I’ve been making stickers for my bike and I went up on DuckDuckGo to find Jackhammer Jill images. My image search gave me way more than I was expecting.
