In unrelated news, this one time my family was on holiday in South Wales, building sand castles on the beach, and my father dug up a 2-inch mortar round. Fortunately it turned out to be a training dummy. We weren’t allowed to keep it, though.
Getting back to the topic, adjustment to the injustice and incompetence of adult life is an important formative process in growing up. I don’t know if it has to be that way. Random authoritarian bullshit is easier to do than kind guidance punishment, though it doesn’t work as well. However we are constrained by the fact that plenty of authoritarians enjoy being able to dole out the random bullshit.
The cruelty is the point.
