I’m sorry, I wasn’t intending to gloss over the bad sides of the 17th century. I was purely referring to the way that the clothes in pictures tend to distract from the events taking place.
The filmmaker Jaques Peretti (I think) once referred to what happened when he took a fashion designer girlfriend to see Downfall. He commented that after the film he was walking around thinking what terrible events, how tragic, all those poor people killed" while she was saying “Do you think black leather and long boots would be a good look for Autumn?”
