I think something new which you may be witnessing, due to that interconnectedness, is that a lot of privileged and powerful folks are finally being made to feel a form of mob justice that was once reserved mostly for the common man…non-whites, the poor and women.

And in this case “mob justice” was just a bunch of people on the internet saying “I’m glad that jerk got fired.” So not exactly on par with tar-and-feathering or burning at the stake.
