I’ve been looking for an old publication from the 70s/80s called, I’m sure, Ideal Homes, about converting buses and suchlike hippy/anarchist pursuits, but I can’t even find a mention of it. It was likely AK Press, I’d have thought (it definitely existed, because I read it whilst sitting in my friend’s converted bus, next to my converted bus).

My gf’s daughter wants to convert a van into a camper, and her and her partner are watching loads of ridiculous vanlife influencer vids that make it look ridiculously easy, and it’d make a good, practical birthday present for her, if only I could a: prove it ever existed and b: find a copy…

PRESTON, Jon and Tim BENNETT. Ideal Home: Survival Edition.

(London): Suspect / Hooligan Press, 1986. First edition. Paperback. Unpaginated. A survival guide containing tips for squatters and travellers, as well as instructions on how to build alternative houses, like teepee’s, yurts, and tips on converting vechiles. Illustrated with cartoons, technical drawings, photographs, and more.

That was the only one I could find and finding that wasn’t easy… Even if it isn’t what you are looking for I had fun.

Found it here:

PDF:

Yeah that PDF has loads on busses and vans.

THANK YOU! No wonder I couldn’t find it trawling for AK Press listings.

Ask someone at Freedom Press, maybe? If it is tangentally anarchist then someone might know what it is.

Having just read the nifty free .pdf, it’s more of a charming historical document these days, though it still has some neat stuff in it for all that.

There’s no need to limit that to America.

Just recently watched that episode. So good! Rom quotes Marx chapter and verse!

I noted that they keep giving O’Brien high profile ancestors! In that episode he has a (made up, I think) ancestor who led a coal mining strike in Pennsylvania… He also claims to be the direct descendant of Brian Boru:thinking:

In fairness, a lot of Irish people claim to be descended from Brian Boru.
