Also, because I think a lot of these people can’t emotionally handle the facts that there’s a deadly pandemic going on, and the Trump administration’s been not just useless, but actively harmful to America’s response. So they double down on denial, pretending things are under control somehow and all of this will soon go away, because the alternative is too awful for them to accept.

Well, yeah. It’s a really bad reaction and as we’ve seen, can lead to seriously self-destructive behavior. I was just adding to @Ratel 's comment, pointing out that genuine fear is also a powerful motivator here, in addition to stubborn tribalism and conspiracy-theory nonsense.

Oh, I grok the skewed psychology involved, I’m just saying that it overrides whatever logic such a person might possess.

Much the same here in Tijuana. Our Loud Neighbors are back to their pre-pandemic ways, out in the street, maskless, drinking, with lots of physical contact. Why can’t the most selfish bastards be the ones to get sick?
