Maybe. However he wasn’t the president at the time, so people that were going to vote Republican “no matter what” still had some other Republicans to choose. Independents who didn’t like Hillary may well have not like this version of Trump even more.
Some of Trump’s lasting support is also (at least I believe) people maintain gin they didn’t make a mistake so they don’t have to be wrong bad people. As long as they maintain the belief that Trump was the right pick then they can be happy. For many people the feeling of being right is more important then actually being right.
Remember also his win in three key states was by less then 2%, in one I think it was by less then 1%. If 1 in 50 Trump voters (in those states) decided this was “too much” then he wouldn’t be president.
