I sure don’t recall anything like this nonsense back when Polio shots came along.

I’m not sure about polio, but 19th and early 20th century North America was full of smallpox anti-vaxxers who successfully lobbied against vaccines and vaccine mandates resulting in epidemics killing 10s of thousands of people, mostly children.
