I keep seeing the angry racists who support Trump (must be a significant majority of that cohort) questioning why people call them racist (and sexist, xenophobic, etc).
They could be playing dumb, but I think the narrative of Trump being “right” and “what America needs” is coexisting with a desire not to be labeled as exactly what makes them want Trump.
Something like me protesting:
- “Why are you calling me a glutton just because I eat chocolate cake at every meal?!?”
It’s obvious to all that I’m obsessed with chocolate cake, but I refuse to be identified as an excessive cake-eater…
- now I realize this is exactly like my conversations with alcoholics who “don’t have a problem”
