Here’s my attempt to describe how pulse oximetry works:
“Blood needs air. No air in blood means people die. Blood with air stops red light. Blood with no air does not stop red light. Flash light through skin and blood with red and lower-than-red light. Look at how much red and lower-than-red light comes back. This will tell you if person needs air, has air, or is already dead.”
