Non-athletes are given an opportunity to carry the Olympic torch all the time, and it’s hardly just an American thing. Everyone from Patrick Stewart to Kate Middleton to K-pop star Jin have had a go at some point in recent games. Not to mention the many hundreds of less-famous non-athletes who got a turn because they were upstanding members of their communities or whatnot.
