We had data services like DDS in the 80s. Expensive and fairly secure. But I can understand the benefit of this approach to the banks. They get a physical, distributed backup. Microfiche will last for years if necessary.
But they had yet to transform their back end from one which processes transactions to one which represents the real time state of their client base.
