yes, yes, and NOPE.
we’re part of that organism. Not riding on it as passengers.
If anything he was more universal mind than religious dogma.
I will check out that post tho.

Sounds like another word for pantheism or that we’re all part of God.
The idea of a “universal mind” is religious dogma.
How about:
We’re just bags of meat that dream we are conscious but go about our evolutionary business.
I certainly agree that that is one of the styles of life some people take. Mostly the irresponsible people in my experience.
And I guess I already assumed everyone is a p-zombie. Or some of them. Neat term.
Personally I believe we get to be every thing that ever lived. And so when we die we start over as another living thing, and live its life. I think maybe there is only one of us, just at different times. So, we should be good to everyone and everything (kind, but not always nice) because that is just us, on an earlier or later part of the journey.
I mean this completely without offense because I’m not judging you and it isn’t something that I’m going to care about one way or the other but… my grandma believes in heaven and that Jesus will meet her there. Doesn’t make it so, though.
That isn’t to say I don’t think we should act as if we were conscious though.
That wasn’t what he meant. I hope you read up on this one then.
I read up on the Gaia Hypothesis about…25 years ago? maybe more. It isn’t a new idea and saying “The Earth may be an organism” is a loooooong way from saying “We are the entire universe thinking itself.” It’s a matter of scale.
“should act” sounds like a… choice.
We could go down the semantic game rabbit hole or you can just admit that communication here is a prisoner of the English language and patterns of thought. Would you prefer I communicate it in E-Prime or something?
We certainly can pretend to be conscious and driving the ship. It’s a nice warm feeling. It doesn’t mean it is true.
nope. but it was his wifes idea, more than 25 years ago.
Maybe reacquaint yourself, if you think it’s dogmatic, I don’t think you got the gist of it.
And if that isn’t a choice, apparently? So why would you or I bother interacting with a closed mind?
I think ideas derived from religious thought are still ideas derived from religious thought. If folks want to back door an “Earth” goddess in order to feel all “science” about it, by all means. It’s just another religion to me.
You’re playing the game of “Your opinion is different than mine so it must not be informed so go read some more on it.” Differences of opinion don’t mean that one party isn’t informed.
and you think that one is derived from religious thought, despite the contrary reality, and the experiences of myself and those who developed the ideas.
You are free to be incorrect. If I assert my reality it’s just semantics after all.
But you don’t even think, man. You’re just along for the ride. You just watch your own thoughts go by, right?
I can call poison ivy bath soap… if I want to be rash.
the reality is that it is not a religious dogma just because that was your experience of it 25 years ago.
At least try to understand the concepts of what the argument is beyond a superficial level if you’re going to disagree with it.
The argument is not “You’re not having thoughts.”
It is “You’re not actually conscious as you think you are and your actions often come before your thoughts and decisions to engage in these actions because a subjective thinking you is not what is deciding to do these things.”
I disagree with all of you, clearly free will IS a thing, and it obviously comes from your gut. I thought everyone knew that, clearly I was wrong.
Mirror time.
Have a good evening. I do like your brain, but your obstinacy is boring as fuck.
You keep saying “reality” while referring to the Gaia Hypothesis. Did I miss some bit in the scientific community where it became universally accepted and where your interpretation of what the Gaia Hypothesis meant had some bearing on us as conscious creatures?
Well, you’ve definitely convinced me that Great Sagan is right and we’re just the cosmos thinking to itself. I mean, it’s scientific!
Now, let’s define “cosmos” and “thinking” in this context.
The “you” that is the part talking is not the “you” choosing which words to speak? The “you” pressing keys on a keyboard is not the “you” making choices about which keys to press?
Not necessarily. That’s what these studies keep showing.
