In fact, there’s a reasonably extensive public ferry system in place in the Bay Area.
That being said, this is the first time I’ve heard of a private ferry. Like trains, boats are extremely efficient for moving large groups of people around, but I’d imagine much less efficient for transporting just a couple dozen.
