Before I got to the tab where I had this article open I had been reading The Onion. When I read this one, I didn’t realized I had gotten back to the “real” news.
Yeah, it’s the Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina, alright. One thing though; it continues past the state border and quite a way up the coast of North Carolina. The last place I lived in NC was Surf City, but that was almost 40 years ago. When I was in the area in 2012, I barely recognized the town as it had grown so densely populated and had become exactly as you describe.
