But if you watch people speedrunning video games, or going to Mechano trade shows its overwhelmingly men despite the fact that, unlike in olympic 100m dashing, there is absolutely no physical explanation for that. I see a lot more men excelling at the kind of things that most people would say don’t matter.

I certainly agree that this may be a cultural phenomenon that I am observing (perhaps even one limited to a small sub-culture that I am familiar with, or, of course, I might actually just be plain wrong).

Wrong, nah, I figure it’s as you mentioned, and it just being a smaller sample size. When I think of Mechano, I tend to think of older (45+) men. When I think of LEGO, I tend to think younger boys and girls initially but then the rest of their fandom comes into view pretty quickly.
