This. Apple won’t let many of its users use 2FA because they don’t have have an iOS device to use as a second factor - Apple doesn’t support U2F AFIK. A device that is the target of thieves, like an iPhone is a crappy second factor.

The nice thing about FIDO2 is that it standardizes the protocol by which a service needing authentication talks to an authenticating device. The user can choose whether to opt for the convenience of on-device authentication or the extra security of a dedicated external authenticator device.
