I just clean it off with my fingernails. Use kitchen towel for the powder. Wash hands afterward and no problem.
Don’t really care about the gunk on dead batteries. My problem is that by that stage, the batteries are frequently starting to swell too. I’ve lost a couple of good flashlights when hinky batteries got stuck inside the case.
