And for the generation of young women who were inspired by her the “idiot crazy no talent sl*t” narrative definitely held us back more than anything else. Music only needs one token crazy stupid girl who is famous for no reason.
Same old same old. Of a hundred thousand talented young girls in the US only a thousand get the opportunity to be talentless girls hogging the limelight from everyone else with their nonsense the rest have to major in things that pay.
Besides the occasional recommendation on an internet forum, I find college radio to still be a great source (as it was for me going back to the early 80s) for new stuff to keep from wallowing in a nostalgia trap. And it’s also great for occasional morale boosting moments hearing that the kids nowadays play something awesome but completely obscure from like 1988.
There are whole genres of current music based on the influences of 70s and 80s easy listening, including my beloved weirdo pop (the genre of TOPs, who I posted the other day in Da Musicz). And there are a HUGE number of covers of 70s easy listening today (some very good!)
I am a millennial who likes the smooth sounds of the 70’s. People made this music because some people liked it then and unsurprisingly… some people like it now.
Definitely an interesting person. Great singer songwriter, some controversial views (which cropped up during the pandemic) and some really self-destructive habits (which made for great albums, but at great personal cost).
