The rather gaunt looking pine tree on the left is really a pine and a maple fused together. They fuse into one tree about two feet off the ground, with maple branches protruding through the scaly pine bark.
Cookie the dog included for scale.
I see buds, so it looks like this unusual coupling hasn’t harmed the maple too much. It’s definitely reshaped the pine, but still, the cones at top suggest it too is thriving in its way.
Mother Nature for the win!
Yes they both appear to be thriving. In the summer when the maple is fully in leaf its difficult to see that they are fused.
I finally got a cell phone! It’s cheap, but it has a camera! Yesterday I took it with me for the first time, when I went forest bathing.
Hidden Falls Regional Park, St. Paul, Minnesota. As you can see, Spring is late here, there is very little green yet. But things should pop this week.
A tree had fallen across the path, not unusual…
