The linked article doesn’t specify that the search cost a million dollars; but that the losses to the airline were estimated at over one million.
I suspect that searching a plane for bombs like you mean it adds up fast; but that all the schedule-shuffling involved in having an airplane out of operation adds up really fast and is less likely to be a taxpayer funded operation.
