We welcome the recommendations of the EHRC report, which broadly align with the changes Jewish and other minority groups have been calling for. Independent complaints are the only way to avoid prejudice and corruption in a party which is riddled with blind factionalism.

Yesterday was an opportunity to acknowledge those fundamental failings, and to begin a process of reflection, reconciliation and education. Any leader who was serious about tackling the issue would have grasped that opportunity with both hands.

Instead, that chance has been squandered by a political office blinded by its hatred of the left and motivated by power for its own sake. So much so that they seemingly acted in direct contravention of both the principles and the letter of the report.

Unfortunately, this isn't a simple mistake that can be reversed once realised. This is the logical outcome of a political party and landscape which is deliberately run with the aim of preventing radical change, and denigrating those who push for it.

It's understandable to feel disheartened, depressed, powerless in the face of this. Because that is what the system is expressly designed to do. If you need to leave, join a union, engage in other forms of organising, that's fine. But never lose that hope for a better world.

Politics isn't just about debating in a room, politics is everyday life and your political actions can extend beyond party politics. What happens electorally doesn't mean you can't make change locally, even nationally, through direct action and grassroots campaigning.
