Funny story: even herpetologists sometimes use “turtle” to mean testudines generally and sometimes to mean waterborne turtles and close kin specifically (as distinct from land-dwelling tortoises and weirdo cousins the terrapins). Meaning cannot be separated from context, even in technical terminology.
