We also grew up breathing lead from our tailpipes and absent seatbelts that turned kids into projectiles. There is a survivorship bias at work here. In the neighborhood where I grew up, almost every white kid except my family is either dead or in prison. Some for killing the dead ones. My siblings and I did quite well for ourselves, but I would not hold that up as proof that it was a great place to raise a family! You see this same argument over student debt and housing costs. “We did it, why shouldn’t you? You snowflakes!” And it makes me furious when I hear it.
