All sarcasm aside, and actually thinking it through for a moment – this is basically an ancient rite to appease the storm gods. A sacred object is placed in the path of destruction. My god is stronger than the storm god, and he will protect me.
It’s the modern equivalent of throwing a sacrificial offering into a fire, or building a makeshift altar during a disaster.
