That’s what I call it. An example would be Saw. People are placed into situations such as cut off a limb to escape a room before a deadly gas is released. The shift that turned me off was from being chased or surprised by the movie bad guy/monster to a focus on extended scenes of people suffering. In the former you could cheer the person on to get away but in the later they are trapped and have to choose between bad or worse. Not my cup of tea but I remember people asking about 80’s and 90’s horror movies, why I would want to watch someone chased by a serial killer.
