I view Elon’s stance as retro future optimism. A lot of things were proposed about the future of the world in the mid 1900’s (moon colonies, flaying cars, jet packs, etc) and it seems like he wants to make good on those promises, he just happens to make money along the way because no one else wants to do it. (Of course this is a way over simplified view, it is much more complex than that)
