To be fair, they might be a language barrier here. My Polish MiL didn’t get some rather simple (to us) puns with out explanation. Remember language isn’t just understanding the words coming out of your mouth, but deciphering the context and meaning.

That was exactly what my thought was. Just because she’s lived in the US for 30 years or whatever doesn’t mean that she necessarily gets that fairly subtle distinction which I took a few reads to understand.

Melania does have a whole host of people whose job it should be to point out such little misunderstandings and stop her from issuing press releases that make her look petty - unless she actually means to.

Straightforward mistake? It could have been but issuing the statement means that either her staff are so shitty that they couldn’t be bothered to explain to her that this really wasn’t a good idea or they did explain that to her and she told them to do it anyway.

Neither is good.
