Well, MS has business around the globe, including many countries where getting the permission of dear-leader is the required first step of any business transaction. So I’m sure they already had procedures in place, and just needed to do what they have always done in any other banana republic.

True, but that’s because traditionally Microsoft bought competing tech in order to kill it. Microsoft needs (or at least thinks it needs) social media in order to compete in the modern world. Buying a popular platform popular among today’s children is a way to stay relevant in an era where Microsoft Office and even Windows are becoming irrelevant.
