My own Southern California city of Monrovia, tucked into the foothills, used to have a “Banana Avenue” when the streets were first laid out in the 1880’s. They really did try to grow bananas there specifically to show Easterners that we don’t get frost here, but the climate wouldn’t cooperate for banana production so the street got renamed something much more boring in the 1910’s.
