If guns were registered and regulated nationally like cars, we wouldn’t have most of our gun smuggling, accidental gun death/injuries or unsolved thefts like we do today.
If gun ownership had the kind of mandatory liability insurance and national level ownership data keeping, the “Iron Pipeline” loopholes would vanish, people would have market incentives towards safer gun storage, and gun hoarding would raise red flags with law enforcement.
Mandatory insurance, national level ownership data collection, mandatory registration and licensing have not impeded ownership of automobiles significantly, they do not do so for guns.
