This doesn’t even get into the fear that Electorates could cast ballots against their wishes of their state’s voters. 100% legal to do, and has happened in the past, but never has it had an effect on the election.
I doubt the Legislature will have either the desire or the gumption to formally get rid of the electoral college. However, there is a state’s pact to cast their Electorate ballots based on the popular vote. It isn’t that far away from being adopted by enough states to the point that it would prevent a president from being elected who did not win the popular vote.
