I don’t think entirely cynical. Just calculated. I have little doubt she stands behind her statements and she really believes her publicly stated views. But she started out in country, and that’s a notoriously conservative genre.
But women tend to be held to a different standard than men when it comes to being an artists.
I’m not convinced of that, though. Isn’t Eric Clapton influential? Johnny Ramone? Dave Mustaine? Gene Simmons? Alice Cooper?
This I totally agree with. The more we expect the people whose work we love to be a perfect reflection of our internal values then all we’re going is projecting. We should certainly appreciate and enjoy the work of musicians, but if we expect them to be paragons, because they happen to write brilliant songs…
