I saw two people trying to get a roid raging skinhead off their buddy that was being illegally kidnapped and dragged around. Under California law, that would be covered under self defense, specifically defense of others. This doctrine (right to defense of another) allows intervening when another person is being touched unlawfully, and only allows using sufficient force to defend the other person, no more. It is pretty clear that these two who intervened in the defense of the thirteen year old kid did not use excessive force in their attempt to defend the thirteen year old kid, they only tried to pry the man off the kid, they didn’t utilize weapons against him or directly attack him. Thus they’d be covered by the doctrine of defense of others and have a strong self defense argument that they were only protecting their friend from being touched unlawfully.
